New Castle County, Delaware
In 1999-2000, following earlier Phase I and II level cultural resource studies for the planned State Route 7/Valley Road intersection improvements, Hunter Research was engaged by the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) to undertake a complex series of mitigation measures for the Gutherie-Giacomelli House/Tweed's Tavern structure prior to its relocation to a new site. This property was identified through the earlier studies as being a National Register-eligible, circa 1800 log building with associated archaeological resources.
Mitigation actions involved: detailed recording of the building to HABS/HAER Level II standards; assessment of the feasibility of moving the building; development and implementation of a strategy for moving the building; supplementary archaeological investigation before, during and after the move; and extensive public outreach (an open day at the site, media coverage, production of public information hand-outs and presentations to local groups). Hunter Research led a team of consultants (including John Milner Architects and Ortega Consulting) in successfully accomplishing these tasks and was a recipient of a 2000 New Castle County historic preservation award.
