Hunter Research has worked closely with the New Jersey Economic Development Authority providing cultural resources compliance services for the construction of two new state office buildings in downtown Trenton. In addition to archaeological surveys completed in advance of new construction, the firm has researched and documented the development of the state office campus in downtown Trenton during the middle decades of the 20th century. The campus includes a half-dozen Modernist buildings by prominent architects. Two of these buildings, slated for demolition, are the Health & Agriculture office and lab, which were designed by architect Alfred Clauss in the Brutalist style. Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) documentation completed by Hunter Research has included background research, large-format photography, and development of a historic narrative and oral histories of state employees who worked in the lab during its heyday as the state’s central location for analysis of human, animal and plant diseases.
