Evan Mydlowski joined Hunter Research, Inc. in June 2015 as a GIS Specialist and Archaeologist; he has over a decade of experience mapping applications in cultural resource management. His primary responsibilities involve surveying and cartographic work relating to the documentation and mapping of architectural and archaeological resources. He undertakes the company’s GPS and total station/transit surveying, aerial drone surveying, digital drafting, and mapping using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) software. Some of his recent projects include mapping for the preservation plan and field school at the William Trent House in Trenton; the Mercer Cemetery Preservation Plan and Heritage Tourism Assessment, Trenton; the Halsey Street Episcopal Church and Cemetery in Newark, NJ; and many projects in Central Park, Manhattan, including a survey of Randel Survey marker locations.
Evan is a graduate of Monmouth University’s Master’s Program in Anthropology (M.A., 2016) and also holds an undergraduate degree in History and Anthropology from the same institution (B.A., 2013). Prior to joining Hunter Research, Inc. he worked as an artifact processor for the Monmouth County Parks system managing the cataloging of thousands of artifacts from a field school that took place in the late 1970s-early 1980s. He used the experience to write his Master’s thesis on the importance of revisiting old excavation records using current technological advancements to further the analysis of the work. His interests include both prehistoric and historic archaeology, the georeferencing and digitization of historic maps, the use of analytical processes within GIS to build upon archaeological investigations, the use of LiDAR-derived hillshade models to document archaeological sites and the development of 3D models, digital elevation models (DEM) and orthomosaic imagery with drone technology.
He is an active member of the Archaeological Society of New Jersey and has served on the board as the Society’s webmaster since 2018. He is also a certified drone pilot meeting the requirements under the Federal regulations of Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (14 CFR Part 107).
