Hunter Research operates one of best known and most skilled archaeological teams in the New York/Philadelphia area. We investigate Native American and historical period sites of all periods, shapes and sizes. We maintain a strong specialty in the archaeological study of Revolutionary War era sites, mills, pottery manufacturing sites, canals, farmhouses and every type of urban resource.
The firm routinely conducts all standard archaeological tasks. Chief among these are collections research, field surveys, large-scale data recovery excavations, monitoring during construction, artifact identification and analysis, and reporting at both the technical and popular level. Our staff undertakes both traditional manual archaeological excavations and projects where mechanically assisted digging is necessary.
We frequently provide archaeological services to engineers, architects and landscape architects, and have extensive experience supplying archaeological input to building and landscape restoration projects. For specialized tasks, such as remote sensing, underwater archaeology, soils analysis, artifact conservation and scientific analysis of artifacts, Hunter Research draws on a well-established network of subconsultants that works closely with our field and laboratory staff.

Morgan Pottery Kiln,
Cheesequake, New Jersey
By most accounts, Cheesequake was an epicenter of clay mining and stoneware pottery production from about 1730 to 1830.
Hackensack Meadowlands Cultural Resources Survey,
Hudson and Bergen Counties, New Jersey
Cultural resources investigations were undertaken at ten environmental restoration locations within the Hackensack Meadowlands pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.
Archaeological Data Recovery at Rowland Mills,
Readington Township, New Jersey
Beginning in 2000 and continuing through 2001, Hunter Research subcontracted to Goodkind & Oea, Inc. (now Dewberry) and the New Jersey Department of Transportation to conduct a program of archaeological data recovery at Rowland Mills, a deserted 18th/19th-century mill-based settlement on the South Branch of the Raritan River that was affected by the N.J. Route 31 dualization project between Clinton and Flemington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

Security improvements at the New Jersey State House in 2006 included ground disturbance in and alongside West State Street, in areas where archival research indicated a high likelihood that significant historical remains would be encountered.
